This is the MUST HAVE guide for anyone with a child in their life -- whether aunt, uncle, babysitter, godparent...or even mom or dad. It describes everything you'd ever need to know about how to take care of a child, no matter what the age (newborn on up) -- from how to hold a baby and change a diaper -- to how to throw a party for a five year old.
The book is also stunning. It's not often that I open an box (which is nearly daily), and say, "WOW," which is what happened when I opened this package. This is an amazingly beautiful book that goes beyond just delivering the information.
Heart and soul, honest, thorough, beautiful, and filled with indispensable information, Savvy Auntie's book is the little angel mom on your shoulder, who's always there with great advice that everyone needs.
This Savvy Auntie is so very excited to have found this book and the Savvy Auntie community. I wish I had this book before the birth of my first nephew. As a non-mom I found it incredibly informative on so many things about babies that would have made me so much more comfortable with each of my nephews and my niece as they were born. It has also helped to validate my status as auntie since I have no children of my own. I would recommend this as a must-read for any auntie or soon-to-be auntie with no children of her own. Even uncles will find a lot of the information helpful. It covers topics such as caring for the baby, gifting, parties, and even helping out the new mom. She also talks about what it means to be a savvy auntie and it really helped me with the emotions surrounding being a non-mom savvy auntie. Thank you so much to Melanie Notkin for this great resource! It's downloaded to my and will likely stay there forever!
I have a 21 year old niece, a great-nephew, and several ABC (Auntie by choice) kids in my life, so I'm not a new Auntie. With the birth of my nephew just over two years ago and his little brother a couple of weeks ago, the involvement level changed. I get to be, and I WANT to be, a lot more hands-on in their lives. I felt like a DebutAunt all over again. The timing of Melanie Notkin's fabulous Savvy Auntie book could not have been better!
Instead of learning by trial and error or simply being nervous about what to do with the kids, I can refer to the incredible amount of information packed into this lovely book. We were on Auntie and Uncle duty when the new baby arrived, and that meant a few days of keeping big brother entertained and happy (our kids have 4 legs). Thanks to the Auntie's in Charge chapter in particular, all three of us had a wonderful time. We took a two year old shopping and out to eat for most of one day, the first time we'd been out with a child that young. Thanks to knowing what to expect and how to handle whatever came along, the whole day was a joy.
There are many things I'll refer back to as ALL of my Auntie kids grow and change, but one thing made such an impact on me that it will simply stay with me. Reading the book and the website have helped me realize I'm part of a wonderful and loving community. When I was growing up, I always treasured the time I spent with my childfree relatives and other adults, that special time focused just on me. Reading Savvy Auntie has helped me remember just how important those times were, and it has given me the knowledge and confidence to keep providing that joyful safe space for the kids in my life. The love was already built in!
Another unique and much-needed element to this book and to the Savvy Auntie community is the lack of judgement when it comes to our choices to have kids or not. The book accepts and celebrates women like me who decided years ago not to have biological children, but it also accepts and celebrates women who aren't sure, or who do want children but the time isn't yet right. Including great Aunties is another important bonus. As I read, I felt accepted and valued simply because I love the kids in my life. That acceptance, without the accompanying assumptions and questions so many of us have dealt with over the years, is priceless.
I've bought copies for other fabulous Aunties in my life, and I'll be buying more in the future. Thank you, Melanie, for creating such a warm and wonderful community, and thank you for the fantastic book!
Peace.
As an aunt recently returned from living overseas, confronted by how to be a fantastic aunt to my three nieces who were born while I was away, I felt overwhelmed by the pressure and frustrated by the lack of written resources for "how to 'aunt' well." That is, until I came across this wonderful book in an search. Ms. Notkin writes a book for aunts in a humorous and accessible tone, and has written the book with broad audience appeal.
She categorizes aunts into two major categories ABR (auntie by relation) and ABC (auntie by choice). She knows from researching demographics that many of her readers will be PANKs (Professional Aunt No Kids), and has chapters with topics including the basics of swaddling and diapering, savvy gift selection by age, children's book recommendations, activities to keep the kids happy, learning, affirmed, and occupied, and she reviews current parenting methods to let aunts know how to support the nieces'/nephews' parents.
Chapters include readable bullet point lists, quotations from aunts all over the US about their experiences, useful anecdotes from the author, and resources for learning more. I read the first half of the book in one sitting, and quickly breezed through the remainder. I'll be coming back for re-reading again and again! If you're a first time aunt, a working professional aunt, a great aunt wanting a refresher, an aunt by choice, a married aunt with kids of your own, or know any lady who fits these categories, I heartily recommend this book to you!
