I purchased this book to accompany a writing lesson for my IEW students, but my own children love it as well. Great illustrations and provides a glimpse into what life would have been like for a little girl during the Great Depression.Product details

The Gardener Rabindranath Tagore 9781298861030 Books Reviews
As an adult I really liked it, especially as a read-aloud book. However, I don't know how appealing it would be to a child. The graphics are great and definitely enhance the story.
This book has become a new favorite for reading with kids. It was a good springboard for a history lesson of the Great Depression and reusing and recycling as kids are needing to learn today. The child in the story always had a very positive outlook on life. The students commented on her attitude which affected the people around her. After reading we took cuttings and planted them in recycled containers for taking home. The artwork was a very special part of the book. We observed the colors used and how they made us feel as we read. A mini-lesson on color was enjoyed. It is a very rich book to be read aloud.
This is so lovely i cry when I read it.
I bought this book for my mother (in her sixties, who loves gardening) to read to my daughter (age 3, who also loves gardening). It is such a perfect book for reading aloud - they read it over and over, and I loved listening to my mother's voice reading it. The book inspired traditions between them - my mother has been sending my daughter seeds in the mail, for example. But more than that, sharing the adventure of this lovely story is a kind of bonding experience - partly because the language is so lyrical and partly because the story is just sort of magical.
The book has had staying power in the short term - we continue to read it together - but it also has longevity. My three year old isn't too young to enjoy this book, but she'll grow into some of the details, too. I imagine sometime she will ask questions about some of the things we gloss over now - why Lydia Grace goes to live with her uncle, for example. There's a lot packed into this little book!
One of our favorite picture books. We love the little girl's optimistic attitude, even in difficult situations. And the letters back to her family are so heartwarming. Plus the pictures are just beautiful!
A beautiful throwback to the kind of stories that reflect loneliness and love with gentleness and depth that are absent from most children's stories. A little girl goes to live with her uncle during the Great Depression and turns her green thumb into a pathway to her uncles's heart. This is a superb book.
This was a lovely story about a girl who must leave her home to go to work in the city to help her family during the Great Depression. She is brave and sweet and instead of dwelling on her problems, she works throughout the story to bring the beauty of flowers to her uncle and his assistants. Her goal is to make her uncle smile--and though she doesn't succeed, she realizes that he does love her and truly cares for her. A lovely tale--with perfect illustrations. I want more by this team!
