Zombie Attack!!! Caverns and Creatures edition by Robert Bevan Joan Reginaldo Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
If you've ever played a table-top RPG, you owe yourself this series. The writing is quick, witty, and raunchy. Robert has a knack for comedy and the absurd. I can’t tell you how many times I thought of or experienced many of the anecdotes he puts the characters through. It may seem like he’s making fun of role playing games, but you’d be wrong. Caverns and Creatures is an open (and comically inappropriate) love letter to the whole hobby, especially the gamers! Very highly recommended.
I picked this short story up and wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. The dialogue carried the pace along quickly and before I knew it, I was finished.
Bevan made me laugh out loud quite a few times. The characters were fun and after finishing this story, I grabbed more of the author's work.
If you want a fun read with plenty of immature humor, don't miss this story. I look forward to reading more from this author.
In this quick little foray into the Caverns and Creatures universe, the gang finds themselves hopelessly outnumbered against a horde of mindless flesh-craving undead, and yet, somehow, hijinks manage to ensue. While anyone will find something to laugh at here, tabletop gamers will hear dice rolling in the background, or perhaps that's just Gary Gygax turning over in his grave. Although I like to think he'd be laughing along with the rest of us.
This is a great 30 minute read about zombies, gore, and comedy set to the theme of a Dungeons and Dragons game between what I interpreted as a clique of high school pals. The humor is pretty much consistent of anything you would see in a Seth Rogan film and the read is very easy. I was a little bothered by the immense amount of passive voice but I shouldn't complain as the story read just fine and didn't necessarily need to adhere to most literary rules.
Anyway, pick this up if you are have a craving for a funny, nerdy, book. I'll definitely will read more from this author!
Julian, Tim, Dave and Cooper are at it again, trapped by an undead horde and their own folliables. The four real-world tabletop role players, stuck in the alternate world of their game with only the abilities of their characters, and their personal meta-gaming knowledge of how that world operates to find their way through a mess mostly of their own making partly by hijacking someone else's plan and miscellaneous magic item. As always, Bevan demonstrates his knowledge of both games and gamers, and manages to twist players dreams of actually being transported into a fantasy world into the nightmare of it happening with the brilliant think tank of your rude and inept drinking buddies.
I was only a few pages into Zombie Attack!!! when I got up from my computer, grabbed a cup of coffee in the kitchen, and placed my inner prude safely on the counter. It was obvious that he and I were not going to get along for a while.
I suggest you do the same. Zombie Attack!!! Is a hilarious trip into a chaotic and occasionally absurd role-play game that has become horribly real. A horde of zombies descends on the protagonists at the edge of a cliff, and they respond with lots of four letter words and something less than military efficiency. The result is a fast-paced, all-too-short adventure filled with action and laughs.
This is my first trip into Robert Bevan's Caverns and Creatures world, and I had a good time. I plan to trek back in to read Bevan's full length novel Critical Failures, so I guess my inner prude better get used to his place on the counter.
Zombie Attack was my third delving into the 'gamers caught in a fantasy game world' created by Robert Bevan. It had exactly what I expected action and humor. The plot isn't deep but it twists a few times. Someone who has been involved in RPGs might be able to guess a few of the plot twists, but might also enjoy the story a bit more.
Having read the novel this short novella is based on (Critical Failures) isn't necessary to follow the story here, but it'll help some in getting up to speed.
If you don't mind a bit of foul language and crude (gross-type) humor in your fantasy adventures, Zombie Attack is probably for you.
4 stars.
Two notes before continuing.
If you dislike excessive vulgarity, don't bother reading this book.
If you can't relate with off the wall, juvenile humor in a book where the protagonists are brash and abrasive young men who are stuck in a Dungeons and Dragons style game, then don't bother reading this book.
Now then... With that out of the way - three words. Love this book. I do. It's not the wittiest book. It's not the deepest book. It's not even the longest book out there. It's 36 pages. And each one *is* VERY funny. If you have a gaming background, spent too much of your youth playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, then this is definitely a book for you.
There is absolutely nothing edifying about this book. Nothing deep or meaningful. It will likely offend a lot of people with the crude humor. This is just four idiots in a screwed up situation doing what they can to survive and royally screwing up even the simplest tasks while they're at it. And it works.
This, like many other series I've started to read, started with a completely different book. Still no clue why I find it hard to start a series on book one - but for this series especially, you won't miss much if you skip around. Looking forward to reading the rest.
Unlimited, the writer definitely isn't 'right' but he is on ku, think a few binge readings in my future.
