A Canter of the Heart The Equestrian and the Aviator Book 1 edition by E E West Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received a copy of this book for my honest review.

I was very intrigued by the description of this book. I love horses, love Australia, and the idea of learning more about para-equestrians sold me on reading it. Canter of the heart has all the bones of a great romance, but the execution left much to be desired. While grammatically the book was flawless, the characters lacked depth and really did not progress. Ms. West does give great descriptions of the Australian surroundings, and later San Diego, the overuse of Australian/British colloquialisms had me re-reading over and over to try and discern what i was reading. My Australian friends grew tired of my texts trying to translate for me. Some words they didn't even understand. This book had so much potential but the author missed many opportunities to engage the reader. Instead of involving us in pivotal moments in the heroine's life, they are skipped over and left for two or three sentence conversations later in the book.

Overall, I can not recommend this book. I would not have finished it if I didn't feel I needed to for the reviews sake. But I do applaud the author for the time and dedication it took her to produce this sweet story.
A Canter of the Heart describes itself as “a romance that will speak… to your heart” and you know what, it really does!
Twenty-year-old para-equestrian Eleanor lives on her parents’ farm in Boyanup and fills her time with schoolwork and riding, and girls’ outings with Annette and Carol. Eleanor is wonderfully positive and fun, the sort of person you’d love to have as your best friend. So it’s no surprise that American naval flight offer David is smitten when he bumps into her at a nightclub. They have just two days together in Australia before David has to go back to his ship. They’re determined that their relationship will last but everything seems to be forcing them apart – spiteful ex-girlfriends, missed phone calls, delayed letters, the prejudice Eleanor perpetually faces from certain qualities, even war. But the prospect of thirty-four magical days in America together keeps them going. Can their love last? Much as Eleanor adores her horses and her riding, it’s David she now needs to make her life complete.
The story introduces us to two fascinating central characters. It takes us from Australia to America and back, with a quick visit to Singapore. The author captures the settings of each place beautifully and you think you’re there too. But what E E West portrays best of all is human emotion. Both Eleanor and David are on emotional rollercoasters after they meet, and we share their love for each other, their longing, their frustration, their irritation, but most of all, their irrepressible optimism and hope for the future.
This is a wonderful story that warms as well as speaks to your heart.
A Canter of the Heart is a warm-hearted romance set in Australia, based on a true story, and it will stick with you when the reading is done. It is a story about the courage of the main character, Eleanor, in overcoming a difficult hand which life has dealt her following a devastating childhood illness and a medical mistake, she is left a paraplegic.

The author draws her world cleanly and honestly - all the daily challenges of life in a wheelchair are present, along with her good friends and those other voices in her life which tell her she will never find love because of her disability. These are timeless themes, and dealt with well in the story. Eleanor has spirit, seen both in her studies and in her love of horseback riding which leads her to try out for competitions, even against able-bodied competitors. When she falls, she gets up again. When people tell her she can't succeed, she tries harder. I also enjoyed the positive relationship depicted with her parents, and the setting of the story which moves from Western Australia to Singapore and Seattle.

David, her love-interest, is a naval flight officer with a career that takes him all over the globe - and does not easily allow space for romance. Although Eleanor and her friends at first suspect him of being a sailor with a girl in every port, he treats her well. The romance is head-over-heels, but very short at first - they only have a couple of days together before he has to move out. The heady emotions and the ups and downs of their romance are well drawn by the author, from the anguish of waiting weeks for the next letter or telephone call, to the irritation and frustration that develops when she visits him in Seattle for a month and they realise their time together is growing short.

If there is fault to be found, I felt, it was in the over-use of dialogue and exposition, and also that a great deal of the dialogue is thick with dialect, which at times made the text quite difficult to read. I appreciate the local colour, which is always spot-on, but I felt some readers might struggle with it. I felt this slowed down and detracted from the main storyline, where some judicious authorial pruning would easily see a better flow.

However, I want to reiterate what I said at the start - this is a warm romance, with an unusual, courageous, and ultimately fulfilling storyline, as Eleanor and David overcome the obstacles to love. For this reason I rate this work 5 stars, and thank EE West for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
A great look at true love in it's truest form. It was a pleasure to meet the character's and places.
