Marina Fiorato has fabricated another fascinating book based on historical data from the 16th Century. She has taken an event, the Palio of Siena, which is a horse race representing various competing sections of Siena, run around the cities main piazza's and tied it into how women in 16th Century Italy had little opportunity for choice in marriage and were married for political alliances rather than love. The author has the advantage of her own close family who have professional knowledge and represent research into the social mores of that time so it is authentic in representation. Women were pawns by their fathers and brothers used to strengthen connections with various neighborhoods and the horse races (2 of them a year) were the all important indication of which were strong and which were weak politically. The author has done an excellent job of keeping the reader engaged with action and having a strong background in history she reports events as they were, not necessarily how you would hope they were. All of Marina Fiorato's books have keep me intrigued until the very end. Her facts as written about the actual historical times are accurate yet she has written a story that is both plausible and inventive. This is not book just for women, yet it does reveal how women have not always been given choices in the past even if they were very attractive and intelligent. Formal education was a luxury not afforded many women in past history as they were mostly considered decorative property by their Fathers and husbands and only a few escaped to make their own marks on history.

Enjoyed. Well researched
Set in the early 1700's in Siena, the centerpiece of this book is the famous horse race, the Palio. Pia, the daughter of one of the key families of the city is shocked when she finds out that she is to be married outside of her district. When she meets the young man, who is to race in the Palio, she wishes that he will die in the dangerous race. When a chain reaction occurs during the race, one rider, Ricardo, gives up his opportunity to ride out for the win to try to save the life of Pia's fiance. After the race, Pia is shocked to find out that she will have to marry the younger son, and even more odious character. Ricardo is brought in to be thanked for his efforts, but he is drawn into an ugly situation with the murder of the rider who initiated the deadly accident. He discovers a treacherous plot against the Governess of Siena and must decide whose side he is on and what he will do about his feelings for Pia. The plot thickens as intrigues abound and the Governess calls in aid from her family which may do more harm than good. While Pia took the lead in the story, the central character is really Ricardo. It was an interesting story, but overly dramatic at times.
Awesome stories!
Well written even if some parts are a little slow. Based on real characters with fictional events that fit the timeframe.
Just as described. Timely delivery. Would buy from again and recommend to friend.
I should be very surprised if this book is not grabbed by a Hollywood studio for a film. The plotline is classic--a young girl learns, just the day before a major local race is to take place, that she will be married to an extremely unpleasant man. While she is preparing for this fate worse than death, and hoping he is killed during the race, she sees another young man to whom she is immediately attracted. When her betrothed is killed during the race, this second guy is there to help. She has, however, got to marry her betrothed's younger brother, who's an even more unpleasant character. Add a plot to remove the local governess, who's an extremely decent woman, by a bunch of ambitious and unscrupulous men, which the hero and heroine unravel, with the help of an orphan....and who can say this won't be popular in movie theatres worldwide? And did I mention the two horse races? And vividly drawn, unforgettable characters?
I love books that give you a strong feeling of what life was like during the period. In this book you get an in depth look at how women were viewed and used for the political and economic advantages of their families; how vindictive and brutal families could be in extracting revenge; how neighborhood rivalries and competitions were brought to the surface during certain sporting and other events, etc. It is an easy read and one that gives insight into the emotions of loss, love, ambition, the triumph of good over evil, and eventual fulfillment on a variety of levels.
